Two decisions sit behind almost every hot water call. Repair or replace, and if replace, what with. The first is usually answerable on the phone. The second is where the housing here has an opinion.
This is small-footprint stock. Terraces, semis and apartments, with cupboards and side returns rather than plant rooms. A replacement has to fit the space it is going into, keep the clearances its type requires, and still be reachable when somebody has to service it in eight years.
That trio quietly eliminates options before anybody gets to a brand or a price. A unit that cannot legally or physically go where the old one was is not a cheaper option, it is a delivery that goes back on the truck.
So we ask what is there and where it sits before recommending anything. The failures themselves are the ordinary Sydney ones: soft water means a dead storage unit has lost its anode or an element, and both of those are repairs long before they are replacements.


Shut it off now and call. The flooring and the cabinetry will cost you more than the cylinder does.

Soft water is exactly why they fail the way they do. In hard-water places a tank silts up with scale and that is that. Sydney's supply is not like that, so what happens instead is the sacrificial anode is consumed protecting the steel and the tank begins to corrode once it is gone, or an element burns out. Both are frequently repairs.
